The beauty of rivalry

Rivalry is a very weird thing. It is a repulsive bond. An admiring hatred. It has the ability to motivate anyone under it's spell to surpass the level of the partner in said bond. It allows people to, push themselves to defeat another in cold blood, even if the couple were in highest respect for each other.

The fact that rivalry exists, and cannot ever be fully extinguished, shows that every creature, big and small, feels threatened deeply inside our hearts. This can range from bacteria fighting over a few substrates, the cheetah that inevitably is required to hunt it's daily zebra, and especially, in human competition. Rivalry is what happens when two or more creatures decide to fight for general benefit, whether for themselves, or more intensely, when for others.

Most rivalries are made unwillingly, but rather through an act of nature, the rivalry suddenly exists. Two or more characters would pit up against each other in a test of ability in some sort of competition. And when the said competition repeats, and becomes routine, the connection forms.

The thrill of having a rivalry is great. To be able to lose and win against the same character multiple times shows how the level of each character's ability changes, most of the time, for the better. When comparing to other characters, no challenge becomes more interesting than the challenge of the self-assigned rival.

It is also possible that a rivalry is one-way. In such a case one considers another a rival while the feeling is not mutual. This does not change how the bond affects the one that feels a rival's presence.

Even if we are frustrated at our rivals, we should also appreciate that we have the capacity to experience such a frustration, as this frustration will help us improve our abilities, because it is being tested at every fateful clash.
